Softr at Nocode Summit 2022
What is Softr ?
Softr is an amazing Nocode tool for building professional custom web applications quickly. And if you need proof, Softr was the number one product on Product Hunt in 2021 and won the Golden Kitty for Product of the Year!
Here is a summary of the highlights of her inspiring speech on the development and future of Nocode tools.
Abstraction in software construction
Mariam Hakobyan detailed the evolution of different levels of abstraction in software development: from machine language in the 1940s to third generation languages in the 1950s, 1960s, C, C++ and Rust, to the upcoming 6th generation languages - which Mariam believes will be a paradigm shift thanks to Nocode tools.
Mariam considers Nocode to be the new programming with just another layer of abstraction. And these new "programming languages" will unlock thousands of new developers.
Just like Legos give you pre-made components for kids to build whatever they want, Nocode components built in different ways allow people to build their own software.
Nocode acts as a development enabler - just as frameworks and libraries have been.
Three fundamental trends are driving the adoption of Nocode
1. Tech talent war
One in 400 people in the world can code: there are 27 million developers. This figure may seem high, but it represents only 0.3% of the world population. Unfortunately, it is impossible to scale learning to code, because the training time is far too long. Today, software development is still reserved for traditional developers. A billion business users who could create applications, use spreadsheets or have to rely on the 27 million developers to work every day. It is impossible to produce everything they need with the resources available.
2. Technology shift
- In the 1990s and before, most software and tools were based on on-premise technologies, were expensive, and generally addressed very specific problems. These solutions were only aimed at large enterprises.
- Cloud-based solutions such as Salesforce, Evernote, many Saas tools that became easier to use over time in the 2000s,
- In the 2010s, it was the beginning of the era of product-based tools such as Dropbox, Slack, very end-user focused and easy to use for everyone, but these tools lack customization and do not necessarily interact with other software, and the only alternative is custom code-based solutions, which is very slow and expensive.
3. Technology-savvy generation
New generations are learning technology every day, are able to use more tools and want to be more efficient with new tools.
Mariam ended with an interesting metaphor describing Softr as the "Canva of Nocode". Canva allows anyone who is not a designer to create amazing designs, whereas Photoshop is designed for designers. Softr is a product designed so that anyone can use it to create professional applications.
